Butoh in New York 4 January 2014

I’m working on a new commission for Vangeline Theater, the USA’s premier butoh dance company.

Here’s Vanity Fair’s film of Vangeline Butoh… click play to see why I’m so excited!

The show is called ’5th’ and it’s a collection of five dances about everything 5th:
5th Dimension, 5th Element, 5th Position, 5th Amendment, and Beethoven’s 5th.

The show features ballet, modern dance and butoh, and will be staged in New York on February 7, 8 and 9 2014 at Triskelion Arts Aldous Theater in Brooklyn. I’ll be performing the music live, please join us!

My music for Vangeline’s new show is a cover of a Bob Dylan song that I’ve reworked at the choreographer’s request into a 9 minute arrangement for strings and voice. I’m singing, and playing my antique autoharp from the 1890′s, its strings creaking with age, and as you can see from the photo, I’m in the process of recording layers and layers of my strings at home, creating a bed of ice for the dancer to glide upon…

This is the dancer who is performing with me. Her name is Azumi Oe, and this shot was taken of her rehearsing to the first demo I sent of the piece…

The lyrics of this classic Dylan song will remain intact, it’s a poem of intense beauty that directly reflects the 5th Amendment. But the structure and instrumentation will be far-removed from the original song. An intricate filigree of strings.

The clock is ticking for me to complete the charts and record this new work, as the dance company have started rehearsals for this new piece.

Perfect inspiration for these wintry nights…

Roses 2 October 2012

Legendary butoh dancer Vangeline flew in from New York last night to dance in my film for ‘Roses’, a cosmic horror film for my vampire love song of that name.

There are traces of paint smeared over my back and legs, white streaked with black, and wax still adheres to my eye lashes, following a little accident with a candle…

I love strings, and I love butoh. Vangeline loves butoh, and she loves strings. And now we’re officially in love with each other’s expression, and have captured it in a magical, beautiful, moon-lit, sky-clad film.

If you’d like to explore more of Vangeline’s world, please please take a look at her Kickstarter campaign, which ends on October 4th, in only 2 days from now!!

Special thanks to our DP Benjamin Markus, assistant DP Grace Rhee, sound recordist Terry Lundvall, stills photographer Laura Kelly and helpful pal Brendan O’Halloran… so grateful for everyone’s delicate dedication and generous support for this film!

‘Roses’ 21 March 2012

I’m honoured to announce the World Premiere of legendary Butoh dancer Vangeline’s new performance choreographed to my song, Roses.

The premiere will take place on Thursday March 22 at The Flea Theater in Tribeca, New York.

‘Roses’ is an intensely emotional love song, so Vangeline’s unique form of Japanese butoh is perhaps the most perfect medium of dance for the music.

I’m so excited and thrilled that Vangeline has chosen to dance to this song.

If you’re in New York, go!!!
